Well here it is:

A woman was out picking up leaves in on the edge of a busy area in Eastern India yesterday when she was attacked by this guy:

(AP Photo)

Forest rangers, police officers and locals tried to drive it back into the woods. About a dozen people were injured in the process.

(AP Photo)

Villagers ended up having to hit it with stones, batons and knives. Officers shot warning shots to scare it away.

(AP Photo)

The leopard eventually succumbed to injuries sustained in the effort. All injured people are recovering.

The big find in Mexico!

Constructions workers building a mall and highway in southern Mexico hit something big. Really big.

Archaeologists were called in and discovered a 60 ton monolith with all kinds of images engraved on it. There was a huge picture of the Aztec God of Rain and various agricultural scenes. Researchers think this stone was used for rituals where they asked the gods for rain.

Exciting news for our loyal Happening Now viewers—the Chat is back!

If you were one of the regulars who joined us for some rousing discussions in months past, you know what you’ve been missing: the chance to interact, live, with us–Harris, Rick, Jenna, Jon and our news producers, plus the opportunity to share your thoughts and opinions with Happening Now viewers around the nation and even around the globe.

We loved it, and we’ve missed it too.

But if you were one of our regular chatters, you know what happened. A small but well-organized band of knuckleheads crawled out of some slimy netherworld for the sole purpose of bombarding our chat page with some rather vile and disgusting comments. We tried to eliminate their foul rants as soon as they popped up but it reached the point where it wasn’t practical; the inmates were running the asylum, and shutting down the chat was the easier, albeit temporary, option.

None of us here liked letting the bad guys win. This is America, after all! Feel free to speak your mind, but don’t put forward a bunch of foul-mouthed nonsense , insulting and degrading others, under the guise of free speech. If you were insulted by any of the comments posted during the waning days of the previous chat, we apologize—some people simply like to yell “Fire!” in a crowded theater.

We desperately wanted to restore 2-way communications with you and provide a venue for you to resume intelligent, pointed commentary about the news of the day. We searched for a way to open a chat room that keeps tighter control over participants and especially their comments. We believe we’ve found a great way to accomplish that.

Our new chat launches Wednesday, June 15th. Just click on the “Live Chat” tab on our Happening Now show page; it will ask you to log on through a social network such as Facebook, Twitter, , MySpace, or OpenID . Once you’ve logged on, you’re in—let the chat begin!

We’re looking forward to hearing your thoughts and chatting back with you. Thanks for your patience and understanding. Rick Folbaum will be moderating our discussions and getting many of the chat topics going. I’m personally excited to get back to chatting with you as we join you in keeping tabs on the news “Happening Now”!

–Jon Scott

Former West Point Cadet Richard King joined us on the show today to discuss the lawsuit he’s filed against R&B singer Patti LaBelle.
His suit stems from an altercation that took place March 11th at Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport.

King, just beginning his spring break from West Point, was standing in the arrivals area outside the airport giving his brother directions via cell phone regarding where to meet.

Surveillance video shows LaBelle’s limo arriving as King is on the phone; he claims the singer ordered her 3 bodyguards to beat him up because she didn’t like him standing so close to her luggage.

King was a starting defensive back on the Army football team, but says he can never play football again due to head injuries inflicted on him during the fight, when his head slammed into a concrete pillar.
The video – captured by Houston Airport surveillance and released by King’s attorney – shows LaBelle’s bodyguards over King and then moving away while King tries unsuccessfully to stand. Houston Police arrive to help and the bloody, bandaged King is placed in an ambulance. Houston Police then take photos with LaBelle.
In the police report King is named as the suspect. LaBelle’s bodyguard is quoted as telling the police that King was intoxicated and took the first swing after being asked to step back from the luggage. LaBelle was not available for comment when we reached out to her today.
After the fight, West Point investigated the incident and “separated” (suspended) King from the Academy. He’s eligible to apply for re-admission if he successfully completes 18 months on active duty as a soldier.

We received the statement from the U.S. Military Academy.

///////////////////

U.S. Military Academy Statement
from Lt. Col. Sherri Reed, Director of Public Affairs
June 8
“The U.S. Military Academy completed a thorough investigation regarding the incident that occurred at the Houston Airport on March 11, 2011, involving Cadet Richard King. Following this investigation, the Academy chain of command took appropriate administrative action in accordance with Army Regulation 210-26.
At this time, the specific details of Cadet King’s case are protected by the Privacy Act, and are therefore not releasable.
Cadets who are placed on a suspended separation status (similar to probation in the civilian judicial system) for an honor violation or an act of misconduct are required to meet a number of conditions in order to continue at the Academy. Failure to meet this condition results in separation from the Academy.
Cadets who are separated from the Academy after the beginning of their junior year are typically obligated to either pay back the cost of their education or serve on active duty as a specialist (E-4) in the Army for a period of three years.
Additionally, the Superintendent may recommend separated cadets to participate in the Academy Mentorship Program. A cadet who participates in the AMP may apply for readmission to the Academy after serving eight to twelve months of active duty service. The decision regarding readmission is based on their complete record at West Point and successful performance as a Soldier while on enlisted duty.
West Point trains, educates, and inspires future leaders of the U.S. Army and Nation, in keeping with the highest traditions of professional military service.”

The winning story today…the inmate who was thisclose to getting out of jail…when this happened…

26-year-old Alexandro Guerrero was about to be released from jail in Yuma, AZ. He served his time for a “failure to comply” warrant. Lots of people would be happy about getting back on the outside, but not him. You see, Guerrero was worried that a Mexican drug gang he worked for would kill him if he got out.

We all know there’s only one way to get locked up, and that’s by breaking the law. So Guerrero beat up a corrections officer while he was still in jail. It took several staff members to control him. In the end Guerrero got his wish. He now faces three counts of aggravated assault on a detention officer.
