Image is everything…or at least, that’s what some would have you believe. It’s a sentiment that works especially well in politics! Take a moment and ask yourself:  “which presidents stand out as most memorable?” Probably those with a less than perfect public image, as those are the figures about which multi-million dollar movies are made and best-selling books are written!

Of particular interest to me this week was President Obama’s trip to China. China, as you very well may know, is known for having particularly stringent censorship of information through various media outlets (internet, television, radio, etc). Obama, a president who captured the hearts of many Americans through his gregarious persona and accessibility, will always be known as an individual who won the 2008 presidential election partially because of his effective use of media. What was particularly intriguing during his trip abroad to China was how his demeanor, and thus persona, seemed to have changed over the course of his public appearances during the week. A more demure and subdued Obama emerged, seemingly at the request of Chinese leaders who wanted to avoid an instance of “Obamania,” and it should come at no surprise that everything being said by Obama on live television was moderated closely. In addition, no concessions to Obama’s popular “town hall” style of press conferences and appearances were made.

To this end, I have a question for you, readers: Should an American president traveling abroad change his personal communication style to accommodate foreign preferences? Or should he continue to act in a manner to which he is accustomed to in the U.S.? The subject of whether an elected president should make concessions to local styles and governments is an interesting subject – let me know your thoughts after the jump!

Last night, my husband and I had the honor of attending a dinner in Washington, DC to raise money for a great cause. If fact, the group's name is CAUSE: Comfort for America's Uniformed Services.

It was started just six years ago by the wives of four classmates from West Point's class of 1967.

It has grown tremendously since then, yet it has virtually no layers of bureaucracy, so donations go straight to services for our veterans.

One of CAUSE's specialties is providing video game and movie carts for those who are facing months in the hospital with little to keep their minds occupied.

  • Thank You Veterans and Your Families

    Show Producers  |

We want to say a special 'thank you' to the men and women who have served our countries. We admire your service and selfless spirit.

On Happening Now today we'll be speaking to Sgt. Klay South who started an organization called Vets for Valor. They have three main programs in which they take part.

1)Backpacks - The delivery of packs filled with items like iPods loaded with music and encouraging audio books.

2)Hero Wishes - Making a dream come true for wounded service members and their family.

3)A Night Out - A chance for wounded service members to step away from their "first community" - the hospital - and into their "second community," a local place where they can relax and enjoy time with family and friends. While it may seem like simply a good time to the patients, the therapeutic value of these events is immeasurable. It is a crucial step in preparing the wounded men and women for reintegration into their "third community," their hometowns, away from others who look like them or are facing similar challenges. These events are an important step into the middle ground of transition.

  • Yes, I’m moonlighting. In Camelot.

    Jon Scott |

I joke that it’s my off-Broadway debut. That’s because the Irvington Town Hall Theater is just off Broadway in Irvington, New York, about 20 miles north of New York City and just south of the Tappan Zee Bridge. It’s a beautiful little theater that sits atop the Village Hall (hence the name). Back in the days before TV and the internet, it was the center of Irvington’s entertainment and cultural life. These days it’s an intimate little space in which audiences can catch a movie, a lecture or—the Clocktower Players production of ‘Camelot.’ I’d received an email mentioning the auditions in late spring. It sounded like fun—I’ve loved the music to ‘Camelot ‘ since I was a kid, although I never managed to see the show until I caught Richard Harris in a revival during the mid-80’s. So back in June, music in hand, I found my way to the theater. “How tough could it be?”, I thought. Irvington’s a small town. I’d done some community theater back home in Colorado more than 25 years ago—this couldn’t be much different, right? Wrong. The audition was, in a word, humbling. I was the third one scheduled. The woman who had the second audition went in ahead of me. When I heard her magnificent singing voice filling the theater and spilling out to the lobby where I waited, I knew I was out of my league. Leaving occurred to me; but then the door opened and it was my turn. I’ve since learned that gorgeous voice belongs to Lisa Spielman, a psychologist and biostatistician who is now our Guenevere. In that role, she’s simply perfect. Our magnificent King Arthur is Larry Reina, an attorney. And yours truly won the role of Lancelot. Originally I wasn’t sure I wanted to be the French knight who steals the Queen, but it’s turned out to be a great assignment. Taking myself out of the mix, I can honestly say it’s a beautiful production and a lot of fun to watch with glorious costumes, cute little children, amazing choreography and wonderful actors and singers who are onstage just for the sheer joy of sharing this beloved fable with audiences. As Lancelot says, “I’m honored to be among them.” We play three more shows this weekend and that’s it. It’s been a quarter-century since my last play, and it might be another before I return. If you’re in the tri-state area and have some free time this weekend, we’d love to see you—in Camelot. Tickets are available at Irvingtontheater.com.
