Given President Obama’s fierce opposition to the surge in Iraq, his stubborn unwillingness to acknowledge its success for the longest time, his dismissive attitudes toward political progress and reconciliation in Iraq, and his inability to understand the importance of succeeding there, today’s announcement is somewhat heartening. There were plenty of reasons to think we could have seen worse.
