From the BND (Breaking News Desk)... it's been a very busy week for us here at Fox News Channel. And, blogging with our viewers on Happening Now continues to give us great material and thought-provoking questions that send us in all the directions we need to go to get to the bottom of the biggest, breaking stories.
Thanks for all your words this week... we'll get bloggie with it again next week.
Severe weather tears up part of the suburbs of Birmingham. People living in Chelsea have a mess on their hands...after powerful winds and rain tore through. The Naitonal Weather Service has yet to call this an actual Tornado... but, witnesses saw the rotating cloud touch down and hit a number of buildings in the town.
Local Fox Station is reporting two people were injured in the storm-- nothing life-threatening.
H-out
Thanks for joining me today on the Happening Now blog.
Here are some closing thoughts on Obama's Troop Withdrawal Plan:
The arc of the war in Iraq has gone from a desperate struggle on the edge of defeat to tremendous progress to the possibility of success. Too much sacrifice has been called for, too many lives have been lost, too much treasure has been spent, and too much is at stake for victory to be squandered by a rapid and unwise withdrawal. To the surprise of many people, Barack Obama was handed a strong, even winning, hand in Iraq. Let's hope he doesn't toss it all away. The consequences would
be enormous, and awful.
It’s certainly true that because of a rapidly contracting economy – due in large measure to housing policies promoted by and regulatory reforms blocked by Democrats during the last decade – President Obama is facing enormous economic challenges, and a deficit that is much higher than it would otherwise have been. But whereas President Bush’s steps were targeted and temporary, Obama has decided to use this crisis to expand, to an unprecedented degree, the size and scope of government.
President Obama’s budget calls for adding more to the National Debt in the first 20 months and 11 days of his term – $3.2 trillion – than was added during the eight years of the Bush presidency ($2.9 trillion. That’s after Mr. Obama attacked Bush’s record on the debt, saying "We cannot, and will not, sustain deficits like these without end."
Given President Obama's fierce opposition to the surge in Iraq, his stubborn unwillingness to acknowledge its success for the longest time, his dismissive attitudes toward political progress and reconciliation in Iraq, and his inability to understand the importance of succeeding there, today's announcement is somewhat heartening. There were plenty of reasons to think we could have seen worse.
Looking forward to answering or ducking your questions tomorrow on Happening Now w/ Jon Scott and Jane Skinner. Like I told Martha via the Live Desk Twitter feed the other day…Washington’s “Most Influential Twitterer” should know what he/she is doing—I’m just learning the uses and benefits of this new medium. Patrick Gavin is not related or my nom de plume.
Karl Rove is a very busy man. Everyone wants to know his take on what's going on in the world. He gained a lot of insight working as the Deputy Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor to President George W. Bush. Now, he's sharing his wisdom with us, tomorrow, online.
He'll be blogging on this website during Happening Now Friday, February 27, 2009 from 11-11:30 am ET. We've got questions. You've got answers. And maybe Karl will have an answer to your answers. Check it out...you could find yourself blogging back and forth with Karl Rove.
From the Breaking News Desk... Michael Vick's attorneys saying he's been approved for release to home confinement.
His lawyers telling the Associated Press they expected him to be moved any day into a halfway house in Newport News, Virginia... but, there's no bed space there, according to a prison official. So, Vick will likely be released as early as May 21st to go home and serve the rest of his 23-month sentence with electronic monitoring.
Remember, Vick left the Atlanta Falcons as their star quarterback for the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas. He's doing time for dogfighting conspiracy.
Vick would only be allowed to leave his home once he's released... for activites approved by his probation officer.
