We know you were trying to get in as much Happening Now as you possibly could today, so we got almost everything on air. Jane, Jon & Harris won't be on again for 2 whole days! So enjoy these extra tidbits over the weekend while we put together an all new bunch of hot stories for next week.
A tow truck assists a semi-tractor trailer truck on U.S. 60 East near Spottsville, Ky., where it had slipped off the shoulder and was in danger of sliding down a steep embankment, Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009. Storm-battered residents across Kentucky buckled down Thursday in shelters and frigid homes for a long wait for power to return after an ice storm cut electricity to more than a half million homes and businesses in the worst outage on record in the state. We're probably not getting a ton of hits from Kentucky today. The Public Service Commission says there are still more than half a million customers with no power. It's freezing cold out there...I mean, seriously...look at those ice covered trees! The spokesman says crew can make "substantial progress" over the weekend. Any chance means COMPLETE progress?
This image provided by the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office shows the booking photo of money manager Arthur Nadel. Nadel ended his two weeks on the lam by surrendered Tuesday Jan. 27, 2009 in Tampa to face federal securities and wire fraud charges. (AP Photo/Pinellas County Sheriff's Office)
And another hedge fund manager is probably heading to court as I type this. Arthur Nadel faces the judge today. Prosecutors say he misled investors and disappeared when it was time to pay out $50 million. Eventually he had a change of heart and turned himself in to the FBI earlier this week. Later we'll find out what his bail is, if any.
Well, with more than one thousand responses to today's Show Question of the Day... and with all the terrific posts from our beloved viewers and talented Show Producers and Hosts... this first week of the Happening Now Blog... will have me raising my Superbowl glass (fave beverage-- Apple-tini!).
More Breaking News to cover and will keep y'all bloggified again on Monday. Great weekend to ya!
Former MD Governor Michael Steele's name floated to the top of the list to lead the RNC this morning... and, the votes are in... IT WON'T BE HIM or the other challengers... for now.
HERE'S HOW IT'S BREAKING DOWN-- Former President GW Bush's guy, and current chairman of the national GOP, Mike Duncan got 52 votes, Steele got 46... SC GOP Chairman Katon Dawson got 28 votes... MI GOP Chairman Saul Anuzis got 22 votes... and former OH Sec of State Ken Blackwell received just 20.
Just crossing URGENT WIRES in the newsroom... Republican Senator Judd Gregg is now confirming and responding to reports that POTUS has his eye on him to be a Cabinet Member.
Sen. Gregg says he knows he's being considered for job of Commerce Secretary and honored to be... but, cannot comment further.
Interesting if this happens 'cuz that would leave a Senate seat open--AGAIN... and, it's possible New Hamshire's Democrat Governor could pick a fellow Dem to fill it-- giving Dems their sought after filibuster-proof majority of 60 seats.
Jane is out of town so I called her to brag that I would be the first Happening Now anchor to see Janice Dean's new baby boy.
This is how it happened:
I was so proud of myself! I wrapped a baby-blue gift and made a special trip to the Hallmark store for a card. Then I called my favorite new mom, Janice Dean the Weather Machine. Janice let me know the best time to visit her new family. That's when I called Jane to brag. Didn't she rain on my parade--Jane went to see Janice on Monday! I guess I came in second.
Janice and little Matthew are doing great. Janice told me she would be posting pictures on her blog soon. Check it out! http://weather.blogs.foxnews.com/
We know the Super Bowl is this weekend and you want the best recipe for those ribs. Well we can't help with that, but we want to know what you think of Congress' recipe for the economy.
Pork or Stimulus: What do you make of the $819 billion stimulus package?
IL Gov. Rod Blagojevich got his day in court, er, State Senate today. We all wanted to hear what he had to say, so that pretty much meant our entire 12pm hour got killed. You missed some great stories, though. So here they are:
Where would you move to if given the opportunity? Denver seems to be the city of choice. (Jon Scott must be thrilled...forget San Francisco...Denver is really where he left his heart!) The Pew Research Center found nearly half of people would like to live somewhere else. So where would they go? Straight to the Mile High city. Rounding out the top three: San Diego and Seattle.
Break out the tissues...you're going to laugh so hard you'll cry (at least, I did). You have to watch this video! A couple of prisoners in New Zealand were handcuffed together for court. I guess they decided not to wait anymore, so they took off. As the made their dramatic getaway, though, they ran into a little problem. Make a note: If you're handcuffed to someone else, and come across a pole, remember that you both have to go around the same side!
This lady should think about opening up a moving company. Look at her racing that U-Haul through southern CA. The police pulled her and another guy over for suspicious activity. Her companion stayed put, but she took off and led police on a high-speed chase. Watch the video...this lady wasn't giving up. Unfortunately nobody else wanted to help her finish her journey. This is just a little clip, but the chase lasted 2 hours.
Fox News has confirmed that the FBI is looking for 20-year-old Timothy Ryan Gutierrez from Cortez, CO. He was just indicted for 2 threats: 1) to kill President Obama, and 2) to blow up the Mall of America in suburban Minneapolis, MN. He's not in custody, he has no known phone number, and police don't know where he is. There's a warrant out for his arrest. So far we haven't found his photo, but you can check out a picture of his house here.
Illinois Representative Susanah Mendoza tells BND that Gov. Blago is in the building and set to make his statement in less tha 10 minutes-- so just after HIGH NOON!
